Project objective and tasks

The main objective of the proposed study consists in quantifying the role played by the hydrophysical transport processes under seasonal ice cover in the oxygen dynamics, nutrients transport and early plankton development in lakes. The project goals are 1) to quantify main governing mechanisms as well as temporal and spatial scales of the heat and mass transfer and dissolved oxygen dynamics under seasonal ice cover; 2) to estimate quantitatively the effect of the lake heat content and synoptical processes at the end of the preceding open water season on temperature and DO dynamics under ice; 3) to estimate the effect of the radiatively-driven convection on the early-spring development of algae; 4) to quantify main governing mechanisms as well as temporal and spatial scales of exchange of matter (including nutrients) between ice and water, internal melting, and snow accumulation and metamorphosis.
