In 1946, Department of Water Problems was founded as a part of Karelian
Branch, Academy of Sciences, USSR. In 1991, it was re-organized into
the Northern Water Problems Institute that structurally belongs to
the Karelian Scientific Center, Russian Academy of Sciences.
Director
Nikolai Filatov is a corresponding member of Russin Academy of Sciences, holds a doctoral degree in geography, professor of the Karelian State Pedagogical University; a corresponding member of International Ecological Security Academy; Head of Laboratory of Geography and Hydrology, NWPI; Chairman of the Karelian Branch, Russian Geographical Society. |

White [Beloe] Sea, Lake Onega and Lake Ladoga, lake and river systems and their catchment areas located in Karelian and Kola regions, Vologda, Leningrad and Arkhangelsk districts.

Natural development of lake and river systems located in North-Western Russia, study of their stability and variability with regard to climatic and anthropogenic factors;

Scientific assessment of the state and forecast of water ecosystems; development of measures on nature conservation and restoration;

Assessment of water ecological potential; development of the scientific basis for management of water resources within European North of Russia;

Optimization of use and conservation of water resources of Karelia
Main achievements for the last ten years

Typical features of water systems of different types in Russian North, their tolerance to the impact of climatic and anthropogenic factors have been studied.

Water resources of Russian North were estimated; the GIS "Water bodies of Republic of Karelia" has been developed.

Main features of acidification and eutrophication of lakes in Northwestern Russia, including Lake Onega and Lake Ladoga were defined.

Eastern Fennoscandia climate changes in terms of intra- and inter-century variability were formulated.

Assessment of the water balance transformation in the taiga zone under climatic and anthropogenic factorswas performed.

23 monographs and about 600 publications in Russia and abroad were issued.

Materials of complex ecological monitoring of the water environment from 1992
till 1998 are transferred to the appropriate committees and used for preparation
of the state report on conditions of Karelia environment and the
development of actions for water protection.

NWPI has a long-term co-operation with universities in Bergen (Norway); Lund and Uppsala (Sweden); Helsinki, Joensuu, Tampere, Oulu and Kuopio (Finland); Ministry of Environment, Finland, with its regional centers in Helsinki, Joensuu, Kajaani, Kuopio. We also have strong links with scientific institutions in Canada, USA, Switzerland, Germany.

In last ten years, NWPI took part in many national and international projects, including those under TACIS, INTERREG, INTAS and INCO-COPERNICUS initiatives.

NWPI is a co-founder of the Scientific Foundation "Nansen International Environmental and Remote Sensing Centre" founded in 2000 and located in St. Petersburg, Russia.
