Seventh Workshop on "Physical Processes in Natural Waters",1-5 July, 2003 in Petrozavodsk, Russia

Notice that dates of PPNW7 have been changed. We faced a sudden problem linked to the 300th anniversary of the city of Petrozavodsk that will be celebrated in the end of June 2003. All our attempts to book rooms in local hotels for the PPNW7 participants in advance failed, as they await a great number of guests. Therefore, we must change the dates. Sorry for causing inconvenience.

SECOND CIRCULAR & CALL FOR ENROLMENT AND SHORT ABSTRACTS
(deadline 15 December, 2002)

SCOPE

As usual, the scope of the meeting will include all aspects of transport, mixing processes, flows and stratification, interaction between physics, chemistry and biology in the natural water bodies and physical background of remote sensing of inland waters. We would appreciate if some topics related to hydrodynamics of shallow lakes and tide-influenced marginal seas will be discussed.

MEETING 2003 in Karelia

The workshop will take place in the period 1-5 July, 2003 in Petrozavodsk, Russia. The city is located on the western coast of Lake Onega, which is the second in Europe. We intend to continue the workshop in the fashion already established: formal talks should account for about 50% of the work time, leaving 50% for discussions. We assume that not more than 50 presentations will be accepted to allow a productive interaction. If number exceeded, the Workshop Committee will decide which presentations are beyond the Workshop topics. You will be asked to send your contribution title and an abstract at the latest 15 December 2002.

For those who need to take a flight to Russia, there are optional routes to reach Petrozavodsk by train, namely from Moscow (Msc) and from St. Petersburg (SP). The former is more complicated as one needs to reach the city from the airport (by cab, it may cost up to 100 USD :-)), and then to buy a train ticket. The latter is preferable, and if you would inform me on date/time of your arrival in advance, we will try and book train tickets for you. It may happen that a flight Helsinki - Petrozavodsk will be on the list (check the schedule from your home airport for Summer 2003). Then, it's the easiest way. The main drawback of this option is small number of seats on a plane they use.

In any case, we suggest 1 July, 2003 as day of arrival for those who decide to take a flight to Moscow (train departs at 18-25 and arrives to Petrozavodsk at 09-15, local time) or the route through Helsinki. For those who would fly to SP, it's optional, as train SP-Petrozavodsk departs at 22-15 and arrives at 06-45, local time, thus you could be here on 2nd of July morning. The only limitation is obviously time of your flight arrival to SP. As trains from Petrozavodsk to Moscow/SP leave at 19-00/23-00, we suggest 5 July as day of your departure, unless somebody would decide to stay for a day longer.

RUSSIAN VISA

Participants from Western countries need a Russian visum, therefore please include some additional personal data in the enrolment form (passport No., nationality, type of passport, dates of issue and validity, issued by, previous visits to Russia) and we will send you the invitation letter.

WORKSHOP FEE

The workshop fee will be 250 EUR to cover expenses for workshop proceedings, organisation, coffee-breaks, workshop dinner, reception and social events, and also the excursion to the Island of Kizhi where the unique open-air museum of wooden architecture is located (it's a one-day trip, and we could use time of to/back trips for discussions).

Accommodation: preliminarily, we have two hotels ready to host you, one (Severnaya) located in the centre of the city (1-bed room cost 20 EUR, 2-bed room 40 EUR), another (Karelia) closer to the Lake Onego coast (1-bed room cost 28 EUR, 2-bed room 32 EUR). Please let us know which hotel you would prefer as soon as possible because of complications mentioned above. One needs about 30 min of walk to reach the institute. More information will be distributed in later announcements.

We will seek for a financial support for the workshop as well as for some participants.
